How are Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Windows benefiting Mass Audubon Facilities Throughout Massachusetts?

Just two years ago, Reliable took part in a pivotal transformation at the Mass Audubon Museum of American Bird Art Education Center & Wildlife in Canton, Massachusetts replacing 23 single-pane steel framed windows with new Bronze Harvey Classic energy-efficient replacement windows, with new interior trim and matching exterior bronze aluminum coverage.

Fast-forward a year later, May 2024, and our project came full circle with the public grand opening of The Nest, a new marker space and community hub for creatives and nature lovers alike! This renovated building with new sustainable and energy-efficient windows not only provides a space to create, but it also offers a newfound comfort and a space to be proud of — figuratively and literally with its eco-conscious energy-efficient replacement windows ensuring the building not only preserves its rich history but also aligns with its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Mass Audubon: Preserving History and Pioneering Sustainability Through Energy-Efficient Replacement Windows

Now, we’re back at our latest energy-efficient project for Mass Audubon, focusing on upgrading the old windows in the administration building, located at the front of the property.

The initial phase of this project focused on removing twenty-two outdated single-pane windows and replacing them with new, state-of-the-art Harvey Tribute triple-pane energy-efficient replacement windows. These new energy-efficient replacement windows are phase one of a two-phase project aimed at reducing energy consumption, enhancing comfort, and fostering a future of eco-conscious building upgrades. Each new window includes the EnergyStar Version 7.0 glass package, which adheres to the latest and most stringent requirements for the Northeast climate zone.

Can you believe this historically rich building embodies both the legacy of its industrial past and the promise of an eco-conscious, sustainable future?

A Building with Roots in Industry and Conservation

The Morse House, initially owned by Samuel V. Morse, was built in 1916 for his wife, Mrs. S.V. Morse. Oscar A. Thayer designed the home, centered around an English Cottage Style. In 1946, a fire damaged most of the structure, which was rebuilt from its original plans, with the addition of a kitchen wing in 1963.

Once part of the industrial empire founded by the Morse family—notably tied to the Rising Sun Stove Polish Company—the property has a dual legacy of innovation and evolution.

After the death of both families, Mildred Morse Allen, heir to this industrial fortune, was drawn into the burgeoning bird conservation movement thanks to the influential efforts of Canton philanthropists Harriet Lawrence Hemenway and Minna Hall.

Though initially unplanned, Allen’s involvement blossomed into a passion for bird preservation and environmental advocacy. Her embracing conservation ideals transformed the building into more than an industrial relic; it symbolized environmental awareness and progress.

Version 7.0 EnergyStar: The Latest Chapter in Environmental Stewardship

Today, the building serves as an administrative hub for Mass Audubon and has previously housed a bird art museum. With its recent upgrades, including the installation of Harvey Tribute triple-pane windows featuring Massachusett’s new Version 7.0 EnergyStar glass package, the building is now poised to meet modern energy efficiency standards. These enhancements not only reduce energy consumption but also improve comfort and safety for employees, volunteers, members, and visitors.

A Broader Commitment to Sustainability

This project is part of a larger initiative across Mass Audubon’s extensive network of properties to incorporate energy-efficient technologies and sustainable practices such as the Version 7.0 EnergyStar rated glass package. By upgrading facilities like the Museum of American Bird Art Education Center, Mass Audubon demonstrates its dedication to reducing environmental impact while maintaining spaces that inspire and educate the public about conservation, wildlife, and environmental preservation.

Honoring the Past, Building the Future

As Mass Audubon continues its efforts to combine historic preservation with environmental progress, this administration building stands as a testament to the organization’s enduring mission. From its roots in industrialism to its role as a beacon of conservation and environmental stewardship, the building’s evolution mirrors the broader journey of creating a sustainable future for generations to come. Through initiatives like this, Mass Audubon not only honors its past but also builds a legacy of eco-conscious innovation that will inspire others to follow suit.
